The Future of Hive

I would like to thank everyone who read the first installment of Hive. I am, however, retiring the first prints of the book and reworking it into one full novel, with easier paths toward the hidden videos, augmented reality and real-world applications that were embedded within, or perhaps I may do away with all of the bells and whistles and just simply write the story I’ve envisioned.  I do consider my first book a relative success, as well as a learning tool, and I want to rework it to be a complete story.

If you have the first edition, please note that the QR codes and augmented reality have been disabled.

Please keep this project in mind for the future, however completion is still a long way down the road.

Thank you,

Daniel Dw

Reader Reviews

Those who have read Hive | Propolis have said they’ve been hooked right from the beginning. They describe it as a page turner with an amazing concept that is well-written, with deeply developed characters and moving drama. The book leaves them with a great anticipation for the next in the series.

Starts off in 2015 and jumps to 2023 This could totally happen to us all and that is what makes this such an amazing read! Revolves around the story of a sick child, whose parents become beta testers for a new device called Hive so that they can afford to get her monthly treatments. Everything goes down hill after this noble act of love is committed. This story has an apocalyptic tone that chills the bones. This book also has QR codes that make this story even more eery and skin crawling. It is amazing; like a peak into our future. Scary and thrilling at the same time. I could not put this book down. I can’t wait for Act 2!

I couldn’t put this book down. It advises you before the first chapter to install a QR scanner on your phone to scan the codes placed throughout the book to enhance your reading experience. At first, I wasn’t really keen on it, but curiosity took over, and I used them. I’m not sure how some of the sounds fit with corresponding passages, but they all definitely added a drama that enhanced the book. This book focuses on a story about a new technology that inexplicably tears a family apart. The youngest member of the family, Samantha, can not use this new technology, due to a medical condition. While drawing out one character of the book who is sheltered from this overpowering new device, there is new insight learned by the reader about how controlling this hive technology really is. Wonderfully written.

I’ve always enjoyed the use of multi-media in books
This is a re-review after a complaint. I ordered the Kindle version. No qr codes. But after reading that version I ordered the paperback book. The story was that new and engrossing. I’ve always enjoyed the use of multi-media in books. This seems to be the best use so far. It just adds more to an already inventive story. Part 2 can’t come fast enough.

Goodreads review

This book is written in the style of so many short-satirical pieces, Daniel pokes fun at this new age of digital connection and what we have in turn loss. While some parts of me want to know more about the detail of Hive (how does it work, what was the fail rate, how did allergies get in the way etc.) the short and sweet introduction really gets the story rolling. After all no one asks Mikhail Bulgakov how he got the mans brain into the dog… (read it if you are not familiar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of…)

While the story is short it moves fast and sweeps you up quickly, the reader is left to fill in some of the blanks and fill in the story. Daniel does not give everything away, and in turn the reader is allowed to make the story their own, an inflective reading that make make you question you attachment to the media you have now.

The scans are a nice touch, sometimes they may seem a little out of place but for the most of the read it really helped to set the pace and immerse the reader in the story. I also think it works in an ingenious way: putting your phone in front of you…..more than once I thought Id like to read this in the hive instead of the paper copy I had…

I hope you will pick up the book or enjoyed it as much as I have. Look forward to reading more by Daniel.

Ironically shared on my social media, may we always be connected 🙂

Geekadelphia: “hive | Propolis” — Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Novel That Combines Interactive Real-World Gaming

By  of Geekadelphia | on May 11, 2015 |

Feel like print science fiction could use a kick in the pants to propel it into modernity? Local author Daniel D.W. may have just published the novel you’re looking for.

Newly released in both ebook and print editions, hive | Propolis  tells the story of Samantha Plessis, first as a young girl who watches the world change around her, all the way to fifty years old, as she is pulled into a growing societal rift and decides to fight in a resistance army.

But that’s only a hint of the central narrative. As hive | Propolis‘ order page explains,

The first book of it’s kind, hive | Propolis includes a new and unique twist with dynamic scannable QR codes embedded within the book itself. This provides story-enhancing soundtrack, video and animation, and interactive story clues that invite a reader to take part in a real-world transmedia rabbit hole.

Also, be sure to note the differences between the ebook and printed formats, as only the paperback edition will link to future interactive materials.

But that’s not all. Hive bills itself as a whole narrative ecosystem, comprising novels, user-generated fiction, films, and an interactive alternate reality game that will be revealed through these various texts. You should really just check out Hive’s central hub to read descriptions, see the trailer, look at images, and read up on the call for writers!

If you’re looking for 21st century science fiction that escapes the page itself, this is it. Be excited.

It can be purchase via Amazon.

Daniel Dw on Rep Radio Podcast

hive repradio podcastI was recently interviewed by Rep Radio, that was founded by an old friend of mine who I hadn’t spoken with in years. While I think I was nervous because I’m not a great speaker, we tried to talk about Hive, but ended up just rambling a lot about other things. The result is two friends just kind of hanging out and laughing while trying to remain on topic.

On Today’s podcast, I am reunited with a dear friend and now, published author, Daniel Dw. In our 16-year friendship, we have bounced many creative ideas off of each other and the greatest fear was the thought of ever having to let one go. We’ve adopted the idea of creating “artistic boxes” to keep all of our ideas fresh and in the episode, we explore Daniel’s collection in a world of science fiction centered around a futuristic piece of software that is the nerve center for the Hive Transmedia Project. Propolis is the first novella in the series that well combine multiple artistic platforms to create a great escape! Wonder where this idea came from? Find out as we go “Inside The Writer’s Mind” with Daniel Dw. Stay Tuned!

This is the first volume in the Hive series and the first part of a transmedia series that will immerse you in an interactive real-world story, if you choose to follow.

This is not just a book. Besides it’s richly-developed characters and constructed narrative, it is an ever-changing, evolving medium. Through scannable QR codes and various decipherable clues within the book itself, you will be able to interact with its story enhancing materials. Musical soundtracks, detailed art images, videos and geological clues can be changed and given to you at various times throughout the transmedia storyline that begins September 29th, 2015. Some of these will be announced by characters in the book from their social media profiles, that you will need to go find and follow.

What’s at the end? That’s something you’ll need to find out, but be prepared that it isn’t going to be quick or easy.
